Calle Sur Grinnell College, Spring 2014

Calle Sur

In May, Calle Sur used traditional, Argentinean instruments to accompany the Grinnell Oratorio Society and the Grinnell College Singers of Grinnell, Iowa, on Ariel Ramirez’s landmark composition, the Misa Criolla. Argentinean composer Ariel Ramirez (1921-2010) wrote his groundbreaking piece in 1964 with the explicit intent of incorporating instrumental, rhythmic, harmonic, and vocal idioms native to Argentina. The Washington Post described Misa Criolla as “a stunning artistic achievement, [that] combined Spanish text with indigenous instruments and rhythms”. It led to album sales numbering in the millions internationally. (Wikipedia)
